All Regency wood stoves, inserts & fireplaces are safety tested and listed to UL standards by OMNI or Intertek Testing Services (ITS) and are EPA Phase II Certified. All Regency gas fireplaces, stoves & inserts are tested and listed to ANSI standards by Intertek Testing Services (ITS), and approved by the Massachusetts Plumbers and Gas Fitters and the NYC Fire Department & Dept. of Buildings. All Regency gas products are also listed to the CAN/CGA standards in Canada, as well as the EnerGuide rating system (CSA P.4.1-02), and the California Energy Commission (AFUE efficiency). The square footage figures for Regency fireplaces are based on an average size single-storey home with moderate climate and an open floor plan. You will need to take your own homes characteristics into factor prior to choosing the appropriate fireplace.
The amount of BTUs required for your home is dependent on several factors such as the climate in your area, and several features of your home including the size, the floor plan (single-storey or two-storey), the room layouts, the quality of insulation, the quantity of windows, and the location of the fireplace / stove. On average, 10,000 BTU can heat up approximately 500 square feet, depending on floor plan, windows, ceiling height, etc.

Your decision really comes down to how much a priority heating efficiency is for you. If you want a lot of heat from your fireplace, you should consider a direct vent gas insert. From a cost standpoint, an insert will cost approximately five times the cost of a nice gas log set. However, since the direct vent insert is extremely efficient, it will pay for itself within a few years through your gas bill savings.
