Fireplace Care & Tips - Gas
Here's what you need to consider when heating with gas.
Taking care of your Regency Fireplace will protect it and ensure a beautiful fire for a very long time. Review these Regency Product Care Points & Tips to ensure optimum clean burning performance of your Regency fire for years to come.
To adjust the flame height on your appliance open the control panel and locate your main gas valve. If the valve has a dial marked “High-Low”, rotating the dial will adjust your flame height. If your main gas valve does not have the adjustment dial, it may be due to the type of remote control that’s installed on your appliance. Contact your local dealer for more details.
Whether you use a Remote Control system or a Wall Switch to operate your Regency Electronic Ignition appliance, it is possible that on colder or damp days your electronic ignition will take a few tries to get going. This is perfectly normal, and not a defect. This is due to the heavier air inside your firebox and venting systems when cold or damp. The absence of a pilot light means there are no other means to generate initial draft until the appliance is running.
It is important to note this effect is completely environmental and normal.

The unit may contain a DC spark box (see owner’s manual), which runs on 1 AA battery. The battery will need to be replaced over time.
- Locate the DC spark box - see owner’s manual for location.
- Remove battery cover from DC spark box.
- Remove old battery and replace with a new one.
- Replace battery cover and reinstall DC spark box.
You don't need a standard chimney to vent your Regency gas appliance. With Direct Vent technology, all you need is an outside wall or unobstructed access to the roof. Gas vent pipe can be easily installed into existing homes at minimal cost. So if you want a fireplace or stove in your bedroom, your kitchen, or even your bathroom, we can make it happen!
If the door gasket requires replacement, you must use 5/8” (16mm) diameter oval, medium density material, 34” (864mm) long for each side. A proper high temperature gasket adhesive is required. Contact your dealer for the Regency Gasket Repair Kit.
Fan bearings do not require lubrication.
Clean the fan twice a season with a soft brush or a vacuum with a crevice or dusting attachment.
The first fire in your heater is part of the paint curing process. To ensure the paint is properly cured, it is recommended you burn your fireplace for at least four (4) hours the first time.
When first operated, the unit will release an odor caused by the curing of the paint and the burning off of any oils remaining from manufacturing. Smoke detectors in the house may go off at this time. Open a few windows to ventilate the room for a couple of hours. A film can build up on the glass upon your initial break-in of the unit. This is normal, resulting from the curing process of the paint and logs. The glass should be cleaned after the first 4 to 6 hours of initial burning to remove these deposits before they bake on.
The glass may require cleaning.
NOTE: When the glass is cold and the appliance is lit, it may cause condensation and fog the glass. This condensation is normal and will disappear in a few minutes as the glass heats up.
DO NOT ATTEMPT TO CLEAN THE GLASS WHILE IT IS STILL HOT!
DO NOT BURN THE UNIT WITHOUT THE GLASS DOOR IN PLACE.
- Always turn off the gas valve before cleaning. For relighting, refer to lighting instructions. Keep the burner and control compartment clean by brushing and vacuuming at least once a year.
- Clean the appliance and door with a damp cloth (never when unit is hot). Never use an abrasive cleaner. The glass should be cleaned with a gas fireplace glass cleaner. The glass should be cleaned when it starts looking cloudy.
- The faceplates & fireboxes are finished in a heat resistant paint and should only be refinished with heat resistant paint. Regency® uses StoveBright Paint - Metallic Black #6309. Note: Faceplates and inner panels made from stainless steel will naturally change color over time.
- Make a periodic check of burner for proper position and condition. Visually check the flame of the burner periodically, making sure the flames are steady; not lifting or floating. If there is a problem, call a qualified Regency service person / dealer.
- The appliance and venting system must be inspected before use, and at least annually, by a qualified field service person, to ensure that the flow of combustion and ventilation air is not obstructed. Note: Never operate the appliance without the glass properly secured in place.
- Do not use this appliance if any part has been under water. Immediately call a qualified Regency service technician to inspect the appliance and to replace any part of the control system and any gas control which has been under water.
- In the event this appliance has been serviced check that the vent-air system has been properly resealed & reinstalled in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions.
- Verify operation after servicing.
In the event that you break your glass by impact, purchase your replacement from an authorized Regency® dealer only.
Replacement glass is shipped with gasket installed.
CAUTION: Wear gloves when removing damaged or broken glass.
- To install the frame and glass door, simply hook the top door flange onto the top of the unit and swing the door towards the unit. Note: Be careful that the glass gasket does not roll up; there must be a gap between the gasket and the door lip to ensure that the door sits securely on the unit.
- With the door in proper position - secure with 3 screws, 2 hooks or 2 latches (depends on unit - see owner’s manual). Reverse steps to remove door.
The unit should never be used with broken logs. Turn off the gas valve and allow the unit to cool before opening door and carefully remove the logs. (The pilot light generates enough heat to burn someone.) If for any reason a log should need replacement, you must use the proper replacement log. The position of these logs must be as shown in the diagrams under Log Installation.
Note: Improper positioning of logs may create carbon build-up and will severely alter the unit’s performance which is not covered under warranty.
Your Regency gas fireplace, stove or insert runs on the power of the pilot flame, and does not need any electricity (except for the blower). This keeps your energy costs down, and ensures safe and reliable operation even during power outages. And if the pilot flame should be extinguished, the valve will shut down and your fireplace will turn off, a valuable safety feature.
It is possible that you will hear some sounds from your gas appliance. This is perfectly normal due to the fact that there are various gauges and types of steel used within your appliance. Listed below are some examples. All are normal operating sounds and should not be considered as defects in your appliance.
Burner Tray:
The burner tray is positioned directly under the burner and is made of a different gauge material from the rest of the firebox and body. Therefore, the varying thicknesses of steel will expand and contract at slightly different rates which can cause “ticking” and “cracking” sounds. You should also be aware that as there are temperature changes within the unit these sounds will likely re-occur. Again, this is normal for steel fireboxes.
Pilot Flame:
While the pilot flame is on it can make a very slight “whisper” sound.
Gas Control Valve:
As the gas control valve turns ON and OFF, a dull clicking sound may be audible, this is normal operation of a gas regulator or valve.
Unit Body/Firebox:
Different types and thicknesses of steel will expand and contract at different rates resulting in some “cracking” and “ticking” sounds will be heard throughout the cycling process.
The optional plated finishes on the louvers and surrounds requires little maintenance and needs only to be cleaned with a damp cloth. DO NOT use abrasive materials or chemical cleaners, as they may harm the finish and void the warranty. Keep doors and louvers off during construction to avoid damage.
Handheld Remote Control
The Remote Control takes 2 x AAA alkaline batteries.
To replace the batteries simply remove the cover from the back of the Remote Control, take out the old batteries and replace with new ones.
Receiver
(may be installed in bottom opening of fireplace or in a wall mounted box)
The Receiver takes 4 x AA alkaline batteries.
To replace, simply remove the Spring Loaded Battery pack from the Receiver by pushing in and then pulling out. Then remove the Cover from the top of the Receiver, take out the old batteries and replace with new ones.
When batteries are replaced, only the current time and day will need to be reset. The set program times are not affected.

Handheld Remote Control (Transmitter)
The life span of the remote control batteries depends on various factors; quality of the batteries used, the number of ignitions of the appliance, the number of changes to the room thermostat set point, etc.
When the Remote batteries are low, a Battery Icon will appear on the LCD display of the Remote Control (see image above) before all battery power is lost. When the batteries are replaced this Icon will disappear.
Receiver
(may be installed in bottom opening of fireplace or in a wall mounted box)
The life span of the Receiver batteries depends on various factors; quality of the batteries used, the number of ignitions of the appliance, the number of changes to the room thermostat set point, etc.
When the Receiver batteries are low, No “beep” will be emitted from the Receiver when it receives an On/Off command from the Remote Control. This is an alert for a low battery condition for the Receiver. When the batteries are replaced the “beep” will be emitted from the Receiver when the ON/OFF Key is pressed (See Initialization of The System).

- Turn the wall or louver mounted switch or remote to the “OFF” position.
- Press “OFF” on the remote control.
- Turn the gas control knob to the “OFF” position to turn off the pilot.

- Have an inspection of the venting system done semi-annually by a qualified Regency service technician.
- Check the Venting System for corrosion in areas that are exposed to the elements. These will appear as rust spots or streaks, and in extreme cases, holes. These components should be replaced immediately.
- Remove the Cap, and shine a flashlight down the Vent. Remove any bird nests, or other foreign material.
- Check for evidences of excessive condensation, such as water droplets forming in the inner liner, and subsequently dripping out the joints, Continuous condensation can cause corrosion of caps, pipe, and fittings. It may be caused by having excessive lateral runs, too many elbows, and exterior portions of the system being exposed to cold weather.
- Inspect joints, to verify that no pipe sections or fittings have been disturbed, and consequently loosened. Also check mechanical supports such as Wall Straps, or plumbers' tape for rigidity.
Most gas appliances are compact and require very little space for installation. This means that you can concentrate their power in the room that needs it most. While a central furnace works to heat an entire home, including the rooms not in use, a gas appliance from Regency, heats your living areas.
