Test Laboratory Accreditation & Certification

Within North America, testing is required on virtually all products that pose a fire, shock or personal damage hazard. Within the hearth industry, testing on appliances is mandatory before an appliance can be sold.
Product certification provides an assurance to inspectors and all Authorities Having Jurisdiction (AHJs) including building code officials, fire marshals, and inspectors that products meet applicable regulatory requirements.
For gas appliances, Canada and the USA require gas fireplace heaters to be certified to a harmonized standard: ANSI Z21.88 & CSA 2.33 Vented Gas Fireplace Heaters. This standard is tested to, and certified by various recognized laboratories, including CSA (Canadian Standards Association), UL (UL LLC) and ETL/Intertek (Intertek Test Labs).

How do I know if a product has been certified?

The certification of any appliance requires the certification logo along with the tested standards to be located on the serial decal that is affixed to the appliance and in the manual

Are Manufacturers Required to use UL or CSA Certification?

No. The Intertek ETL & WHI and Omni-Test Laboratories O-TL Marks are recognized alternatives to the CSA and UL marks in both Canada and the United States
The legal requirement for manufacturers is that the product must be tested by a laboratory that is an American National Standards Institute (ANSI) and Standards Council of Canada (SCC) accredited Certification Body. Intertek and Omni are both testing laboratories accredited by numerous agencies and institutes including both the ANSI and SCC.
WHI, O-TL, CSA, and UL Marks all demonstrate that the product has met the minimum product safety requirements as determined through independent testing. The only difference between the marks is the testing laboratory behind them.
