Everything You Need to Know Before Buying a Freestanding Gas Stove

What is a Gas Stove?

Freestanding gas stoves do not require a chimney and instead can be vented directly through a wall or the roof. This allows for greater flexibility when deciding where to install a gas stove.

The Fireplace You Never Thought You Could Have

Some rooms were never built for a fireplace. No chimney. No hearth. No obvious place for one. For years, that meant those rooms simply went without - cold in winter, missing the warmth and character that a fire brings to a space.

A Regency freestanding gas stove changes that entirely.

Unlike a built-in fireplace that requires framing, a finished surround, and a dedicated chimney, a freestanding gas stove stands on its own - positioned wherever it makes the most sense for your room, your layout, and your life. Vent it through a wall or up through the ceiling, and you’re done. No major renovation. No months of construction. Just a stunning, high-performing gas stove in the room of your choice, installed in a fraction of the time of any other fireplace type.

It’s the most flexible fireplace solution available - and one of the most rewarding.

How a Freestanding Gas Stove Works - Venting Made Simple

One of the most common questions homeowners have about freestanding gas stoves is how the venting works without a chimney. The answer is simpler - and more flexible - than most people expect.

Direct Vent Technology - The Modern Standard

The vast majority of Regency freestanding gas stoves use direct vent technology - the same sealed combustion system used across the Regency gas insert lineup. A double-wall vent pipe runs from the stove to a termination point on an exterior wall or through the roof, with one path drawing fresh combustion air in from outside and the other exhausting combustion gases out.

Because the combustion system is completely sealed, no indoor air is consumed and no combustion byproducts enter your living space. The result is a safe, efficient, and clean-operating stove that maintains your home’s indoor air quality.

Direct vent terminations can exit through a side wall - keeping the vent pipe run short and the installation simple in most rooms - or run vertically through the ceiling and roof for installations where a wall termination isn’t practical. Your Regency dealer will assess your space and recommend the most practical routing for your specific installation.

B-Vent Technology

Some stoves use B-vent technology - a natural draft venting system that draws combustion air from the room and exhausts gases vertically through a flue. B-vent installations require a vertical venting path and are suited to specific applications where direct vent isn’t feasible. If you’re considering the U38 or have a situation where B-vent may be relevant, your Regency dealer can walk you through the requirements and confirm whether it’s the right solution for your space, or if another stove will work.
