When shopping for a gas fireplace, insert, or stove, homeowners often focus on size, design, and heat output. But one essential feature that plays a key role in comfort, convenience, and performance is the ignition system.

From advanced electronics to time-tested technologies, today’s ignition systems are built to enhance your experience—offering reliable startups, flexible control, and smart energy use. In this guide, we’ll explore the major ignition platforms and features: Proflame, Millivolt, IPI and CPI pilot modes, and Electronic, Standing Pilot, and FFRT technologies.

Why Ignition Systems Matter

Your ignition system determines how your fireplace lights, how it operates during different seasons, and how you interact with it—whether through a wall switch, remote, or smart device. Modern ignition options are designed to deliver seamless functionality with user-friendly control.

Choosing the right system ensures your fireplace fits your lifestyle while maximizing comfort and ease of use.

Ignition System Platforms: Proflame vs. Millivolt

Proflame Ignition System

The Proflame system is a smart, electronic ignition platform commonly found in premium gas fireplaces. It offers:

  • Remote control operation for easy startup
  • Wall switch and thermostat compatibility
  • Energy-saving pilot management
  • Battery backup for uninterrupted use during outages

Proflame systems are ideal for homeowners looking for convenience, comfort, and efficiency with flexible control options.

Millivolt Ignition System

The Millivolt system is a dependable, low-maintenance ignition platform that operates independently of household power. Its key features include:

  • Manual or remote ignition capability
  • Constant readiness for operation
  • Consistent performance regardless of electrical availability

Millivolt systems are great for homes that value simple controls and consistent performance year-round.

Ignition Types: Electronic vs Standing Pilot

Electronic Ignition

Electronic ignition systems use electricity to ignite the pilot flame only when the fireplace is in use. These systems are designed with modern living in mind and feature:

  • Smart thermostat and remote control operation
  • On-demand ignition for efficient energy use
  • Optional smart home integration
  • Battery backup for added assurance

Electronic ignition delivers a modern, reliable fireplace experience with hands-free functionality.

Standing Pilot Ignition

Standing pilot systems feature a ready-to-use flame that remains on and lights the main burner when needed. This classic ignition method offers:

  • Consistent availability
  • Power-independent operation
  • Straightforward controls

Standing pilot ignition systems are especially appreciated in regions where uninterrupted performance is essential.

Note: Standing Pilot systems are not available in all jurisdictions.

Pilot Modes: IPI vs. CPI

With most electronic ignition models from Regency you will have the option to choose how you want your pilot light to behave – do you want the pilot light on all the time – CPI – where you are constantly burning fuel but startup is virtually instantaneous, or do you opt for Intermittent pilot, where startup takes a few seconds longer, but you are not burning fuel when the unit is not in use.

Intermittent Pilot Ignition (IPI)

IPI mode is designed for efficient operation. The pilot only lights when the fireplace is turned on, allowing for smart energy management.

Benefits:

  • Energy-conscious operation
  • Seamless ignition experience
  • Perfect for seasonal use or mild climates

IPI is standard in most newer electronic systems and offers both ease of use and optimal fuel efficiency.

Continuous Pilot Ignition (CPI)

CPI mode keeps the pilot light running continuously. This creates stable fireplace performance and supports quick start-up during colder months.

Benefits:

  • Immediate flame response
  • Maintains consistent venting and combustion
  • Ideal for colder regions or continuous winter use

Many Regency fireplaces give you the flexibility to toggle between IPI and CPI modes depending on seasonal needs.

Note: In Canada and other select regions your fireplace may include a 7-day timer which turns off the Continuos Pilot after 7 days without a call for heat – learn more.

Flame Failure Response Timer (FFRT)

Flame Failure Respone Timer (FFRT) is a built-in safety feature used in electronic ignition systems. It confirms that a flame is present before allowing gas flow. This smart technology includes:

  • Continuous monitoring of flame presence
  • Automatic gas shutoff if no flame is detected
  • Seamless safety integration within modern systems

FFRT offers added peace of mind while keeping operations completely automatic and user-friendly, however can result in fireplaces occasionally taking a few seconds longer than expected to startup.

Finding the Right Fit for Your Home

All ignition systems have something unique to offer. Whether you’re looking for advanced control, energy efficiency, or traditional simplicity, today’s ignition platforms are designed with the end user in mind.

  • Want remote control and smart features? → Look for Proflame  with electronic ignition
  • Need a fireplace for colder climates? → Choose a system with CPI mode for consistent warmth
  • Prefer classic simplicity with all-season readiness? → Millivolt systems with standing pilot are a great match
  • Looking for built-in safety and modern control? → Select models with FFRT technology
